Vatikani and express your desire to officially unite with Carrollton U.M.C. He will want to meet with you to get to know you better. He will also contact your former U.M. church to request a certificate of transfer. He will invite you to participate in a multi-session membership class which will give you important information about the theology, history and organizational pattern of our denomination. The class will also help you learn a little bit of the history and mission of Carrollton United Methodist Church in particular. He will invite you to participate in a multi-session Membership Class which will give you important information about Christian faith and the United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n<h5>Baptism &amp; Church Membership<\/h5><p>Baptism is a requirement for church membership. That only makes sense when you think about it. If you want to be a member of a Christian church, it is because you want to be a follower of Christ. The first thing we learn from the Lord is that we are in deep need of forgiveness due to our tendency toward sinfulness. Only Christ can forgive us. We experience that forgiveness through the sacrament of Holy Baptism. This group met in the courthouse as a place of worship until Baptists and Methodists cooperated to use a building on the west side of the square. There were only twenty Methodists originally, but after a camp meeting in 1840 ninety-one converts united with the church.<\/p>\n<p>For a time there were two Methodist congregations in Carrollton, the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal South.<\/p>\n<p>Carrollton Methodists and Presbyterians cooperated to build a brich church on South Virginia Street. But in 1865 the Methodist Episcopal Church purchased the property for its own use. At the same time the Methodist Episcopal South congregation built a church on South Main Street. They used this building until 1899, when it was sold to the Methodist Episcopal Church (1st-me-church.html) which continued to use it until unification of the two congregations in 1939.<\/p>\n<p>On February 15, 1899, the Methodist Episcopal South congregation occupied their newly constructed building (1916photo.htm) on North Folger Street. This building is still in use today (building-now.html) by the United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n<p>In May of 1939, three branches of Methodism were unified into one denomination. Hence, the two Methodist congregations in Carrollton were united at a special worship service on October 22, 1939.<\/p>\n<p>As the church membership grew in the following years, the facilities were expanded. To provide additional Church School facilities, the church purchased the Edmonds property in 1953. It ws used as a parish house until the completion of a new educational building and the fellowship hall in 1961. Soon after this the church purchased the Goodson property on the south side of the church and made it into a parking lot.
